2026-27 Leadership Opportunities
Enhancing School Safety Using a Threat Assessment Model
For over 25 years, the U.S. Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) has conducted research on the thinking and behaviors of current and recently former students who commit acts of targeted school violence in an effort to prevent future tragedies. Key findings from this research indicate these devastating incidents of violence are preventable. NTAC's first presentation covers past incidents and recommendations from their research on targeted school violence and interrupted plots. It emphasizes using a multidisciplinary approach to identify, assess, and intervene early with concerning student behaviors. The second presentation explains how behavioral threat assessment and management (BTAM) addresses student needs before crises occur. Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), such as PBIS, offer a framework for BTAM teams to expand proactive prevention and intervention options. FDR, WWII, and the Holocaust
The Holocaust was the greatest horror of World War II, and the Allies obtained evidence of Nazi Germany’s genocide of Europe’s Jewish population during the war. How did Allied leaders, especially President Franklin Roosevelt, respond to the Holocaust? Did the Allies attempt to disrupt the death camps’ operations in order to halt the mass murder? Could the Allies have done more? How much coverage did the genocide receive in the United States and how did the public respond? Using a selection of primary and secondary readings, we will address these questions during our seminar. This program will be conducted as a discussion, utilizing primary source documents as the only readings, and with the Discussion Leader facilitating the conversation, instead of lecturing or presenting. Registrants, therefore, are highly encouraged to read all the documents in advance and come ready with questions. Date: 10-15-26 (from 8:30-2:15) Location: in-person @ ROE 45 (Lunch IS included!) Cost: FREE for all (regardless of ROE) Facilitator: Dr. Eric Pullin (Carthage College) PD Hours: 5.5 Tags: social studies |
